![]() In fact, MS is killing it right now because they make it so easy to use them as a single service provider for most of a company's software. It sounds like your IT department is buying software piecemeal from bestbuy instead of entering into a proper agreement with MS for X number of users. It's your IT department (1 person I'm guessing) that is bad, not Microsoft. ![]() So tweaking that little fillet is now a giant engineering task vs. You burned out STEP or IGES files when you made it. you can't even open your CAD? That's fine you say. the company no longer supports that software? So the cloud licensing service is down? So. The tool's cut, everybody who worked on it is gone, the CAD remains, and. Imagine having to move tooling from plastic vendor A to vendor B ten years after your product launched. This is kind of a flippant post, but there's truth in the core argument. Onshape is new, pretty cool, pretty slow (in my experience of the product which was two years ago), and not a full featured design package for CAD/ CAM.īuy Solidworks, Creo, whatever. A ton of businesses got fucked, because they weren't expecting a significant shift in pricing models or accessibility of the product features. Look at what Autodesk did with their licensing of Fusion 360 recently. Also means you can browse and use everyone else's public designs.Never use cloud-based licenses for proprietary formats that need to be accessible years down the road. It's still great software and you should try it out! Just be fully aware of the terms. ![]() It's probably unlikely that will actually happen, but something about it rubs me the wrong way. If you invent something cool/marketable in OnShape Free anyone can find it, copy it, sell it, etc., and there's no opting out. Customer grants a worldwide, royaltyfree and non-exclusive license to any End User or third party accessing the Public Document to use the intellectual property contained in Customer’s Public Document without restriction, including without limitation the rights to use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense, and/or sell copies of the Document, and to permit persons to whom the Document is made available to do the same. My issue with OnShape is specific to their Free Plan and what it means that your documents are "Public." It's not only public like "anyone can view this online." It's public like "public domain":įor any Public Document owned by a Free Plan User. Watch a couple OnShape tutorials and you'll have few issues transitioning from Fusion 360. Thank you in advance!Īs a browser-based CAD program it's excellent. Have any of you guys ever had any experience with Onshape? I've had years and years of experience on Fusion, so I feel like I probably need to start over from zero and actually learn Onshape to take full advantage of it, but I want to heard any feedback you guys may have of it before I go and invest hours and hours trying to learn it only to end up going back to Fusion.Īny input is appreciated. Unfortunately, the FOSS CAD scene is pretty scarce, and honestly the only decent alternative I've found is Onshape, which I've actually never heard of. So long story short, I'm getting sick of Fusion 360's habit of requiring me to sign in and then taking an hour to finish an update before I can do anything at all, and on top of that I'm also trying to switch over to Linux as my only operating system, which does not support Fusion.įusion is great, and I would gladly pay for it if it was supported on Linux and wasn't so aggressive with its required updates, but sadly it's not, and I want to find an alternative.
